Built for the Lift: How TrakMotive Xtended Travel™ CV Axles Handle Off-Road Demands

Sep 29, 2026 | Tech Bulletins

If you’ve seen a lifted truck roll back into the bay with a clicking CV joint or a torn boot just months after the lift kit went on, you likely know the problem. Lift kits and off-road setups are more popular than ever, but they change the geometry the factory axle was designed around. The result is extreme operating angles, added stress, and OE CV axles pushed well beyond their design limits, which leads to premature failures, comebacks, and costly downtime.

TrakMotive’s latest tech bulletin, Tough Off-Road Conditions Require Superior Engineered Solutions, explains how Xtended Travel™ CV Axles are engineered to solve this problem from the inside out. Here’s what every technician, parts pro, and off-road enthusiast should know.

Why Lifted Vehicles Are Hard on OE CV Axles

Raising a vehicle’s suspension increases the angle between the transmission or differential and the wheel hub. It also increases the amount of plunge, or in-and-out movement, the axle must absorb as the suspension cycles. OE axles are built for stock ride height and stock suspension travel. Once a lift is added, the joints run at steeper angles for every mile driven, and the axle can run out of travel during articulation. That combination accelerates wear on joints and boots and can lead to outright failure on the trail.

The Solution: Xtended Travel™ CV Axles

TrakMotive Xtended Travel CV Axles are purpose-built for lifted vehicle applications, pairing an innovative design with upgraded components made for aggressive angles and increased suspension travel. The bulletin highlights four key engineering advantages.

1. Up to 40mm More Linear Travel (60mm Total)

At the heart of the Xtended Travel design is an advanced sliding spline center shaft with an integrated ball bearing design. This provides 40mm of additional linear travel, for 60mm total, so the axle can accommodate suspension lift and articulation without bottoming out or pulling apart. The ball bearing design also keeps the sliding motion smooth under load.

2. Enhanced High-Flex Joint Angles

Both the inner and outer joints offer up to 47° of articulation. That’s more than double the range of typical OE tripod joints, which are often limited to around 23°. For lifted trucks and SUVs, that extra angle capacity means the joints aren’t operating at the edge of their limits during everyday driving, let alone full articulation off-road.

3. High-Strength 8-Ball Joint Technology

Where applicable, Xtended Travel axles use high-strength 8-ball joint technology, delivering 60% greater operating angle at the inboard joint. The inboard joint is often the limiting factor on a lifted vehicle, so this upgrade directly targets one of the most common failure points in lifted setups. For a deeper look at how 8-ball joints compare to other designs, see our breakdown of the different types of CV joints.

4. EnduraFlex™ Boot Material

A CV joint is only as durable as the boot protecting it. TrakMotive’s EnduraFlex™ boot material offers improved resistance and flexibility for up to 2x longer life, along with superior ozone and temperature resistance from -40°F to 176°F. That matters on lifted vehicles, where boots are flexed harder and exposed to mud, water, debris, and temperature extremes.
