CV Axle Replacement Mistakes You Need to Avoid

Replacing a CV axle may seem straightforward, but overlooking a few critical details can lead to installation problems or costly drivetrain damage.

In this technical video, automotive expert Andrew Markel highlights two common CV axle replacement mistakes that technicians should avoid.

1. Failing to Inspect the Retaining Clip

When removing an old CV axle, always check that the circlip (retaining clip) is still attached to the axle.

If the clip remains inside the transmission or axle housing, it must be retrieved before installing the replacement axle. A loose retaining clip can potentially damage internal differential components or prevent the new axle from seating properly.

Before installation, verify that the old clip has been accounted for and that the replacement axle has the correct retaining clip installed.

2. Reusing an Axle Nut That Requires Replacement

Many vehicles use specialized axle nuts designed to secure the axle to the hub assembly. Some manufacturers specify that these nuts must be replaced whenever the axle is removed.

Reusing a single-use axle nut can compromise its ability to remain properly secured, potentially allowing it to loosen over time.

Always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s axle nut replacement and torque specifications.

Small Details Make a Big Difference

Proper CV axle installation involves more than removing the old component and installing a replacement. Taking the time to inspect retaining clips and follow axle nut requirements can help prevent unnecessary complications and support a reliable repair.
